Java Applets
While Java is a lovely platform for many developers, I hate it from a user point of view.
Its awfuly slow when an applet is being loaded in web browser, doesn’t matter if its IE or Firefox or whatever. The SUN JRE is very unstable and slow. (Yes, I have the latest JRE. Yes, I have a fast computers with too much memory. And again, Yes, its the same on all my computers).
This led me to disable Java in my browser for now. And I believe I am not losing anything by taking this decision. However I feel much better when browsing web.

I really agree with you and can’t understand why information society is movig toward it so fast? I am aware that java has many advantajes but each organization should also consider its drawbacks before migrating to java platform.
JRE is a Technology for beyond with n Core CPUs
need extraordinary CPU process for one stupid tiny text viewing.
I totally agree with you. At our university we have a so called “e-learning system” developed and maintained by IBM. To be honest, it’s complete bullshit!! (Userside Applets, they nuke Firefox..)
I diasgree.
Although you are right to say that the VM overhead plays a part in the performace of UIs, you should also acknowledge that for componentised multi tiered architectures java is a fantastic technology – so I would not rubish the “JRE” per se
I will also add that I have used both fantasticly good performing /and/ extremely poor performing java UIs.

I’ve never been a big fan of Java, in and of itself. I’ve been even less of a fan of Java “craplets”
