It’s not too hard to predict next google service: Google Messenger

Maybe it’s just an idea, but even the idea is very cool. And if it ever happens:

  • It will use Orkut for registration and will utilize your Orkut friends list as your contact list.
  • It can also be used as a Google search representative on your desktop. So you can search in google without opening up a browser windows.
  • It can search on your hard disk content, a local search engine.
  • And also a desktop notify tool for your Gmail.

What do you think? Anyone has other ideas?

And remember, you heard it here first.

I think you’re definatly going to see some hard drive searching tools. This is one area they can probably beat Microsoft at it’s own game. Will drives getting bigger all the time files get lost in the nooks and crannies and with delays in the release of the next version of Windows, it may be the perfect time . . .
I also wouldn’t be suprised if Google came out with some time of messenger that would beat the pants off everyone else and raise the bar.

I think, It’s became to be happen in the near future and I probably prefer the Google Messenger to the other IMs. It will be so handy and useful.

Thanks 4 ur great posts in this blog. I recently aware of it and I’ll try to check it out frequently.

sounds realistic, but right now i cannot imaging using a google messenger ;)

Well, I don’t know about all this Google stuff. I’m not really sure what to think, but let’s see. Babak, you’re a system administrator and a web designer (I think). Have you ever wondered why Google’s cookie expires in 34 year? Have you wondered why there’s always an S fields in the cookie with a randomly generated string. Have you ever wondered why the heck they would need to store a cookie on your computer if you only use their web search tool? I do understand that they need the cookie for the search preferences, but what if I don’t have any preferences. Anyway, maybe I’m just paranoid or something, but I would really encourage people to think about stuff like this because we don’t want (at least I don’t) a second Microsoft-like company who uses its power to monopolize and manipulate the market. Just some of my thought. Don’t take me seriously. Really.

  8. Eric says:

So google, by using Orkut, will not only know who your friends are…but how often you talk to them. And, depending on the topology of the message delivery system, (P2P or Client/Server), WHAT you say to them (like GMail).

Sounds like a winner to me…I’m signing up!

They only reason that they (Google, MSN, Yahoo, etc) care about your personal information is so that they can try to sell you stuff. You always can say “no”. I really don’t mind seeing target marketed text ads in my GMail account. It sure as hell beats those stupid flash ads that pop up in hotmail.

As for spyware, adware and all that jazz? There are plenty of utilities available to manage those. You can even block all cookies if you want to.
If you are really paranoid, try Ghost Surf, or any of those programs that let you surf the internet anonymously.

Anyway, I’m happy that google is coming through with more services. I’m sick as hell of microsoft.
Hopefully Google Messenger will function as a notification tool as well, letting you know when you have something in your GMail account.

  20. kafe kaf says:

    love for one.

  21. salma says:

I heard google is making emails , it won’t be usable as much if there is no google messenger , if the idea is doable you can combine both the hotmail and the yahoo messenger and make a perfect messenger , though I prefer yahoo messenger , some of my freinds prefer hotmail messenger for it’s width , thank you for your time

  22. A google messenger service is missed, more than anything else, for the absence of incoming mail notification. Google does not strictly need to have a messenger to implement this; they can simply plug in their systems to the other messaging services that people already use!

  23. Clayburn says:

I love Google, everything Google. They’re awesome and if they monopolize anything it’s not because they forced it, it’s because we choose Google over Ask Jeeves and Gmail over Hotmail and Orkut over Friendster and Blogger over the thousands of other Blogs out there. I want to see Google make Messenger because they will do it right. I even have a concept for them here: http://gmessenger.blogspot.com

I hope Google messenger would be simplistic like it’s e-mail service and that it doesn’t consume memory like a Hummer consumes gasoline….as MSN does now and any clone of that program for that matter. A messenger which is more basic looking than MSN 4.7, that hasn’t got games which I will never play, no webcam support for people without webcam, no share my desktop crap because my desktop is my own and I don’t wanna share it, not even with the memory it uses when it isn’t running.

In other words a messenger with chat function and sendfile function……..the rest can always be made available through a plugin/addon =)

I think Google should consider useing the same technology as MSN and Yahoo!. Yahoo! and MSN customers are able to use both MSN and Yahoo! messenger with their email- so people with Yahoo! can use MSN, and vise vera. If Google were to team up with MSN and Yahoo! in this way- people would be more like to switch to their service from their existing messenger client.

  40. bala says:

I bet Google will buy Groove.net , period.

  41. Alicia says:

Look, For all you Paranoid users out there, what exactly do you say online that is so incredibly personal that OTHER PEOPLE in this world at that very same time are ALSO talking about in a sense.. Google dosnt care what you talk about or who to, they dont have enough money to sit there reading all your nightly conversations to your girlfriend in the next state and how bad you wanna make out with her.. and if you think about it, every time you look up Pr0n or any search, they can see what Your IP is if they really wanted to, so in a sense using their search engine for that as is already makes it easy for them to see what youre doing if they really cared to know. Youre insanely paranoid and if youre THAT afraid… Dont use it. OR EVEN BETTER dont Write stuff you dont want seen. Now STFU and dont post on these sites if you have nothing good to say about the service, we all happen to be excited about new programs from reliable companys… so go away and dont ruin the fun….

  42. heep says:

To hook in on ‘the paranoid subject’.

If you are really paranoid and want the perfect security, so that no one can break into it:

    1: Unplug your modem
2: Turn off your computer and unplug your powercable (there is technology to internet through the electricity-net….BE AWARE :P )
3: Grab a large magnet or make one, if you don’t know how…..go to the library to find a book on making one because, you have just turned off your computer and having it on is FAR too dangerous. Put the magnet real close to your harddrive.
4: make a big pile of wood in the garden/park or light a barbeque and burn your harddrive, cd’s, dvd’s, floppies and memory-modules(there might be data left in the memory that we are unaware of)
5: Smash your monitor/display and also burn it, make sure to have the fire hot enough to melt the glass(that is if you have a CRT screen). Someone from a /secret/ orginazation might just have the resources to recognize the faint residu of your “private” conversation and uncover it and then READ IT !!!.

Why all this?? Someone looking for your “secret” and “private” information might just want to break in your home in order to get to it.

And I bet a big chunck of ‘paranoids’ don’t know about Windows XP spyware which installs with the OS or what all those handy toolbars from different online companies such as yahoo, msn and google are doing all the time. or how about the default setting from Winamp to send unanomynous info to the company.

Anyways, I don’t care if they spy on me a bit, as long as it is well useable and doesn’t consume my resources =)

  43. blickiliee says:

Rishi they do have a google tolbar for mozilla firefox. There’s a small search box which is set to google by default and you can also install a gmail notifier extension into mozilla or firefox.

As for those of you who are retarded & saying Burn your compupter… Some people feel like they have a right to privacy. Maybe google doesn’t read your every conversation you can bet your bitches that they do log your websites. This way they know what you like to look at and they can get you better ads in your mail, on google pages and one day… in your arse. Don’t get me wrong, I use google daily & my primary email service is gmail but I know that there is no way in hell that a 1gb inbox can be free without some kind of hidden catch. This is where your data comes in. Period.

Claybourn… Some of your ideas are ok but they’re practically a direct rip of Yahoo Messenger and you would need to put more than 2 seconds copying and pasting things in mspaint to really impress anyone. You also forgot to mention making it fully skinable, a file transfer system, I’d like to see directIM type function where you can see the pictures in your client window. Not have to open them with another app or like some irc clients have a 1 button solution to launching files that were sent to you… Like F3.

I’ve only seen gmail-ads once and that was when I had an e-mail in English. The gmail-adsystem doesn’t work yet for my language =P

Anyways, I love the idea of a skinnable messenger, very original and above all it adds great functionality to the whole. It does take up a bit of screenspace but all that in trade of using more memory and having all that extra functionality, I won’t be bothered with that.

While they’re at it they can directly ad semi-transparant backgrounds to which you can add pictures with bright colours to enhance the readibility of the chat. I’ve also heard that multiple colours (as bright as possible) are quite good for your eyes.

In other words if google copies everything everybody else has already there isn’t much point in making it in the first place. That is unless you base the choice of messenger on the company-logo you like best.

I think that if/when Google is bringing out a messenger it will be significantly different from the rest.

I cannot wait to get g-mail or goggle messenger! I have yahoo e-mail and it sucks. I want mail that opens new windows so I don’t have to back track. I’m sad that all my pals have gmail and I don’t. I also want a messenger system that doesn’t install programs such as weatherbug when I download it. Yes…because aim downloaded weatherbug my parents blocked the site so no more instent messaging intill google gets its messenger going. I don’t like the msn or yahoo systems. Hopefully soon!!!
